Bay Area Anatomy / Écorché
Workshop
Instructor: Andrew Ameral
Since antiquity, anatomy has played an important role in an artist's education. Going as far back to the time of Alexandria, careful investigations of the flayed figure was paramount to an artist's understanding of the nude.
"I describe my course in anatomy as one that is visually based. What's important for me is to understand those shapes, both boney and muscular, that impact the surface of the skin and create form. With the help of having to sculpt the écorché figure in clay and completing numerous drawings, my students also develop a deep appreciation and understanding for the geometric construction of the human body. An understanding they can apply critically either directly from nature or their imagination."
This intensive course will involve weekly in depth lectures and sculpting the écorché figure in clay. The class size will be kept small. Each student can count on receiving the necessary individual attention needed to help them with their interpretation and understanding of this complicated subject.
Students enrolled will also be required to complete numerous anatomical drawings. Students may have the opportunity to draw from a live model weekly to apply the information given in class - this will be discussed during the first week of class and depends entirely upon participation.
"Sound academic techniques I learned and taught at the Florence Academy of Art (FAA) will also be introduced throughout the length of the course."
This course is excellent for painters, sculptors, illustrators, and digital artists who are passionate for the human form and looking to improve their understanding. It is open to artists of all levels of experience: advanced and beginners are welcome.
Class begins Monday - October 17, 2011
CLASS SCHEDULE
Every Monday Night: 6:00pm - 10:00pm Lecture / Écorché Sculpture Day
(a model will usually be present)
This course runs anywhere from 18 - 22 weeks (about 5 months) and should be finished by Monday, April 11 (19 weeks). Class may extend a few weeks longer due to holidays and/or how long it takes to build the armature.
The studio should and will usually be open every Saturday from 9:00am - 4:00pm for any student who wishes to work on their sculpture outside of class. No instruction will be given. The only time the studio will not be available is if there is a workshop being conducted that weekend or the model room is in use.
The cost for this class is $2,400.00 per student. The maximum number of students I will accept is 12.
